High School Japanese 3A and 3B
This two semester course provides a stronger foundation of Japanese language by requiring the student to use the characters in a daily basis. Vocabulary and situations learned in the past 2 levels are reviewed but put in a more realistic perspective where many types of verb tenses appear in a more complex sentence building. The study of kanji takes more importance at this level where the student will learn the origins of it well. Culture is studied in a comparative level with the student’s own culture. The course will cover the first part of the text book (lessons 1 to 8 ) of the book Adventures in Japanese 2.
Prerequisite: High School Japanese 2B or approval by BSN Instructor
Enduring Understanding
By building upon which has been already learned in the past two levels students will construct more complex sentences. They are requested to read and write Japanese hiragana, katakana and are introduced to ca. 60 kanji. Kanji study is more intense and vocabulary acquisition is done in a faster pace. Conversational skills are emphasized with the use of more complex grammar.
Assessments
There will be a variety of assessments used in this course. Homework will be assigned daily and will be approximately 40% of the total grade. There will be frequent quizzes on vocabulary and Japanese characters, and unit tests at the end of each chapter. The quizzes and chapter tests will be combined for about 40% of the grade.
